Natural
Choice Holistic Health Meal, or Wholebake as it is known, is a dog food
with a difference. It is growing in popularity as people report upon the
remarkable benefits that they have seen in their dogs. Natural Choice does
not boast of rocket science technology for its results, but a sensible,
common sense rethink of the way in which dogs are fed. Enter Wholebake’s
developer, Neil Garrod, whose family run Natural Choice.
Like
many breeders and trainers, Neil wants his dogs to be the best and he
passionately believes that “a dog is what it eats" in just the same
way humans are. The quality and type of food that is being fed is going to
have as much effect upon the dog as environment, breeding and management.
But
how do you know what you are feeding your dog? Read the label on many
brands of proprietary dog food and it may list ingredients, which are
unknown to the lay-person, and when it does refer to one that we may
understand, we have no idea of the quality or the form which it may take.
For example, one such ingredient would be “Meat derivatives”.

Neil
sought to get to grips with what foods should truly be fed to dogs that
would be safe, healthy, and effective both nutritionally and also cost
wise.
This,
along with having read a book that opened his eyes to the benefits of
doing things in a completely natural way, was a turning point. Convinced
that what was being offered en masse to dogs was not the best for their
health, Neil began what was to be years of reading, questioning, research
and development to find foods that would meet both his expectations and be
good for the health, wholeness and well-being of his dogs.
After
feeding his dogs in what can best be described as a “home-mix” method
for some years, and an opportune meeting with a biscuit manufacturer, Neil
was encouraged to take it further. ‘Wholebake’ was in the making.
At
this point Neil was also told about The British Assodation of Holistic
Nutrition Medicine, so he went to see them and discuss his food. Showing
great interest and after a serious look at the product, BAHNM
granted a licence to the food.
‘Wholebake
Original’ came into being, closely followed by Natural Choice Ltd.
Neil
has handled, trained and occasionally bred dogs for over twenty
years.

He
has studied his own and many other people’s dogs for at least as long.
He has read a great many books on the subject of dogs and all types of
related issues. The one thing that was dear from early on is that no one
food can supply the complete and whole needs of a dog. They are by nature,
creatures that would quite happily survive and thrive by sourcing their
diet from a great variety of areas. The fact is that by nature the dog is
a scavenger.
These
would include all forms of raw meat including bones and offal, the stomach
of their prey and its contents (vegetation such as herbage, cereals,
grasses, vegetables and fruit). This enormously varied diet would suit the
‘evolved physiology’ of the dog completely, being that ‘best’ that
Neil was after.
Being
loyal to this truth, Natural Choice seeks to encourage owners to feed a
diversity of food sources to their
dogs (very different from all
complete dog food manufacturers who suggest using only their product)
with ‘Wholebake’ providing about one-third to
a half of the diet. This represents the carbohydrate or energy part, also
having an extremely broad spectrum, nutrient rich herbage.
